PHOTO 9/24: Elements of Art – Value

DESCRIPTION

We will discuss the following ideas:

  1. Present Composition Techniques

  2. Element of Art Notes: VALUE

TAKE NOTES during class discussions. You will submit notes for credit every few weeks. If you are absent, you must watch the Zoom video to get the notes.

If you were absent to any of the meetings this week, go to Google Classroom, where the recorded meetings have been posted under Classwork>Recorded Zoom Meetings.

CLASS ACTIVITIES

  3. Give feedback to FIVE other people, concentrating on the elements of art and composition techniques that you have learned.

  5. Elements of Art practice: The Incredible Egg –

Use an egg (or a round object) and a single light (like a lamp or flashlight). Photograph the egg in the following lighting scenarios. Have fun with your egg and remember the Elements of Art and your composition techniques:

  1. Soft Light – Soft light is very desirable in portraits. Here’s how to get soft light on your egg:

  2. place a see-through object between the light and the egg, this will diffuse (soften) the light. See-through white fabric works well, even paper or paper towels.

  3. Try BOUNCING the light off a wall instead of shining it directly on the egg, it will look softer.

  4. Window light is always beautiful and soft.

  5. Hard Light – The farther away the light from the egg, the harsher it will be. Try adding something black to “eat up” the light on the shadow side. This will deepen your shadows even more.

  6. Front Light – The most plain, boring kind of light. Objects usually do not look very interesting this way because this type of light erases most textures and shadows.

  7. Side Light – Very dramatic. Remember that you can make it soft or had light.

  8. Back Light – This is how you get a silhouette! Try placing your egg directly in front of a light, like a window. Make sure that your lamp or flashlight doesn’t show up in the picture.

  9. Overhead / Under Light – Your egg will look very angelic as it gets a halo of light. If you put the light below, it will look creepy.

When finished, create a grid on a single page with each of your photos and turn it into the TURN IN folder in the EGG folder. Label each photo. You can use an app on your phone like piccollage, Adobe Spark, or Photoshop Express to create a photo collage to share. Name your file 1_last_first_egg. DO NOT COPY IMAGES FROM THE INTERNET!!

HOMEWORK

  1. Turn In your Incredible Egg grid by Monday, September 28th.  

  2. Turn in your FORM picture in padlet.  I fixed the link.  Due ASAP.

  3. Comment on five FORM and SHAPE pictures in padlet.

  6. Post your best Egg photograph to the VALUE padlet.  Due Monday, September 28th.  

  7. Begin working on your Elements of Art Photographs, which are due October 12th.

  8. Each week, there are TWO elements that we will study.  Post your two images to Padlet then to your Elements slideshow.
